Three articles some people simply don't want you to read I wonder why? Dear cozma, It has happened again. We receive a phone call or an e mail at our offices.'Could you please take us off the list to receive icon magazine. It contained an article which Dr xxxx cannot agree with. The article is alarmist/causes offence/disturbs cancer patients/upsets Martians/whatever'.This means that no one in that Hospital will ever see a free copy of icon again (unless they become a CANCERactive member). No patient will benefit from the latest worldwide news. No patient will be told facts about their cancer other than those the oncologist wants them to hear. We often deliver 200 magazines to a hospital. We go back, of course, and ask what the offending article was and what the particular comment was. We ask what the oncologist tells patients instead. We never get a sensible answer. So here you are - three articles some oncologists don't want their patients reading!! Chris WoollamsOne woman's account of how she beat breast cancer (without drugs!) A true 'Living Proof'Cancer survivors come in all shapes and sizes. We don't invent them for living proof; we just ask that they have beaten the '5-year' milestone and genuinely are 'all clear' within reason. Usually, they have used orthodox medicine but added their own mix of complementary therapies round the outside. In this case Pauline Lomas took an 'alternative' approach to healing her disease. And this demanded a deep look inside herself as her life had truly been one long roller coaster, including travels, love and Hollywood. Then breast cancer arrived, shortly before her 50th birthday. Adamant it was caused by trauma, she resolved to treat it in her own way. It is a 'must read' story. You may ask why someone's true story incurs the wrath of an oncologist - it beats us! Radiotherapy beats cancer and is harmless Just kidding! The next article was a 'harmless' centrefold, or so we thought. There is a stack of research, coming out of the USA in particular, on things you can do and take to improve the success rates/survival times of radiotherapy and reduce the side-effects. We thought people should know. However, at the beginning of the article, and being responsible people, we quoted what the Lancet Oncology magazine said about the risks - 'always ask your oncologist about side-effects because they are not insignificant'. Apparently according to a top oncologist in the West Country this article is alarmist and the recommendations are all contra-indicated and they themselves can do you harm. So there! The same oncologist wouldn't answer 5 e mails from us asking exactly what he tells his patients about the risks of side-effects!!! Presumably, not a lot. A Diet for Chemotherapy But not according to NHS 'dieticians'A couple of years ago we received two 'complaints' from cancer patients; not about our work but about a booklet published by the NHS on what to eat when having chemotherapy. To give you a taste of the recommendations, every page had little drawings of ...... cheeseburgers, milk-shakes and sticky buns. Now repeated research studies clearly show that common sugar (glucose) will feed your cancer while cows' dairy contains the hormone IGF-1 which is known to make cancer cells grow and divide. I could tell you the negative research on animal fats, salt and refined carbohydrates too. So we wrote to the major Hospital where the booklets had been found and received a reply from an NHS 'dietician' who carbon copied all the top people at the Hospital saying that the booklet was written by NHS dieticians who were Government approved, so they must be right (and all the research and nutritionists I was quoting wrong). This is the article we wrote as a result of researching the issue further. (It turns out that dieticians only see the 7% of patients who are losing so much weight it can kill them! They don't have enough time to see the others). We cannot now be on public display in the hospital - yet again for telling the truth! The many patients cannot benefit from a personal copy of icon each issue. A big thank you from CANCERactive Our all-new Members' AreaWe love receiving your donations.
